Of all of a human’s basic emotions, it is arguably love which is constantly over-exploited in the media. Love now comes in many forms including through the internet, in which it has basically become a commodity in the virtual world through online dating and networking sites. It is clear our dependence on computers nowadays is gradually increasing. With this our need to express ourselves on the computer is also escalating, and this includes articulating our most basic human emotions including love.
My animation is a parody of our increasing use of computers to express these emotions, and also looks at the dangers and fantasy of living in a virtual world. A man who seems to find love online only figures out later on it is not the true love he is looking for. His venture into online dating leads him from one relationship to the other – each based on different wants and needs. The animation will also feature stereotypical characters you might find online – hackers, people on webcams, and just ordinary people surfing the internet.
Surfing the internet provides us with a useful anonymity which is the reason why so many people can now express themselves online without restriction or constraint. This element is something which will be emphasized in the animation – as stereotypes in the real world practically do not exist in the virtual world. I believe that love cannot be thoroughly expressed through a screen, and this is the reason why I am making this animation to emphasize the fact that our dependence on computers is increasing. While it is useful in some aspects for artistic expression it also at the same time limits our ability to express ourselves emotionally which is often all too clear in online dating.
